Talk to me about a place where you can be yourself.
My home is a place where I feel free to be as silly, sad, glad, or mad as I want to be. It doesn’t matter who’s here, because the people who are in my home, who are invited to be here, they accept me and know me and know who I am, regardless of my mood at the moment. So, home. My home.
What was your biggest or most meaningful teachable moment?
My dad is celebrating his 85th birthday on September 11th. We didn’t celebrate for quite a while after 2001 because he said it wasn’t a day that was for celebrating. But with that in mind, I want to talk about my dad really quick. I had a childhood friend who came in from New York to Dallas and met with me before COVID. And as we’re sitting at dinner, he told me a story about how when he was a young man, it was my father who took him aside and said we expect great things of you when you go to college. It was my father who showed him how to be the man he wanted to be when he grew up. Then I asked him about his father, and he said, 鈥渨ell, he showed me the kind of man I didn’t want to be.鈥
So that story showed me that the things you do in life, the things you might not even remember doing, can have a powerful impact on not only the people closest to you, like your friends or family, but all people you touch in your life. And you might never know how you helped drive a successful businessperson to where they are today, because 30 years ago you did a simple act.
OK, if you were to win an award, what would your walk-up song be?
When I was younger, I would say the answer to that question would be Katrina & The Waves – Walking on Sunshine. Yeah, everything was easy, right? Life was roses. But when you get old, you have more responsibility, a little more life tucked up under there, right?
Now I would go with Destiny’s Child 鈥 鈥淚’m a survivor! I鈥檓 not gon鈥 give up, I鈥檓 not gon鈥 stop, I鈥檓 gonna make it鈥. So sorry Beyonc茅 for trying to sing it. Unfortunately, I didn鈥檛 make it to her concert this year. Another time, I did win tickets to a Beyonc茅 concert, but couldn鈥檛 make it, so I sold them. And I hope that made someone happy!
If you could talk about something for 30 minutes without preparation, what would it be?
Oh, I’m a font of information for sure, and since I鈥檓 paid by the word to talk in my current role, this is kind of easy for me to fill 30 minutes of time. But there are probably three things that would be at the top of that list, so first it would be digital advertising. I鈥檝e been doing that for 10 years. I can talk about diamonds because I worked in that industry for a long time, and just in case anybody needs a diamond, we still have connections. And the third would be Judaism, because I’ve been practicing my whole life.
